From steel mill to smart grid: Adam McIlwain's 20+ year path through the energy transition
Adam McIlwain is Vice President of Energy Sustainability at CLEAResult Energetics, where he leads energy efficiency, electrification, and decarbonization work for federal, state, and utility clients. With more than 20 years’ experience spanning federal consulting, utility technology deployment, and startup growth, he focuses on bringing Department of Energy (DOE)-backed research to market for utility customers across the U.S.
Before Adam McIlwain ever sat across a table from a utility executive or briefed a room of federal energy officials, he was walking the floor of a steel mill, clipboard in hand, checking emissions and compliance logs.
It's the kind of start that builds something hard to replicate: a real, ground-level understanding of the work. Long before "sustainability" became a corporate priority or "decarbonization" a boardroom term, Adam was seeing energy at its most physical: furnaces, emissions stacks, and the raw industrial reality of how much power it takes to make things. That early role, as an energy and environmental compliance officer fresh out of his undergraduate studies in energy and sustainability, gave him a genuine appreciation for the people and processes doing the work, day in and day out.
It's a perspective that's shaped everything since. Adam has spent his career working across nearly every level of the energy industry, from the plant floor to the boardroom, and each stop taught him something the last one couldn't. That range shapes how he leads today. He recognizes the value each person on his team brings, whatever their role, because he's spent time in enough different ones himself to know how much expertise it takes to make a team like CLEAResult Energetics work.

Learning the system from the inside: the early consulting years (2003–2016)
From the mill, Adam moved into consulting, first at one of the world's top federal consulting firms, then at a Big Four global consulting firm, spending the better part of a decade inside the rooms where energy and climate policy actually get written. He supported federal agencies including the DOE, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Navy, and the U.S. Department of State, working on emissions reduction, hazardous waste management, water strategy, and a renewable energy policy portfolio that put him in direct partnership with governments and stakeholders across a dozen countries across Europe, Central America, South America, Africa, and Asia.
At that global firm, his scope widened further: managing vendor relationships and negotiating technology rollouts for major utilities, including a project that deployed more than 40,000 smart meter devices for one electric utility, cutting manual processes and improving customer service, and eventually leading its Sustainability and Climate Change practice.
It was a successful run in large-firm consulting, but Adam was still left looking for more ownership over the outcome — not just advising on the transition, but actually building the machinery that could deliver it. (You can see Adam’s full career path on his LinkedIn profile.)

Taking a leap: the startup years (2016–2025)
In 2016, he found it, not in another established firm, but in a startup as one of just three people and a shared conviction that there was a better way to do this work. Here, Adam wasn't managing a practice inside someone else's company anymore. He was building one from the studs: writing the handbook, standing up recruiting, figuring out marketing, chasing the first contracts.
It paid off. Under his leadership, the firm grew its team by 200% and won $80 million in contracts with the DOE and other federal agencies. By the time he stepped into the Director and Chief Growth Officer role, he was managing a $40 million annual pipeline and had helped turn this scrappy startup into a serious player in federal and commercial consulting.
That chapter reveals something about how Adam operates: he's drawn to inflection points — moments where something could go either way, and where the right person in the room can make the difference.

Finding CLEAResult Energetics: joining as Vice President (2025–present)
In late summer of 2025, that instinct led him to CLEAResult Energetics.
CLEAResult Energetics wasn't a random landing spot. It's a firm with deep roots: founded in 1979, less than two years after the Department of Energy itself, and built almost entirely around serving it. Over the decades, that mission expanded outward, from DOE-funded research into utilities, state energy offices, and commercial clients. Today, the business is organized around two divisions: one focused on transportation and fleet electrification, the other on commercializing next-generation energy and infrastructure technology.
For Adam, the appeal was in the blend. On the research side, roughly 80% of the CLEAResult Energetics team is still deep in DOE-funded work: advanced manufacturing, industrial technology, renewable energy, and battery and energy storage research. It's exactly the kind of frontier, lab-to-field work he'd spent years advising on from the outside. Now, as VP, his job is to help take what that team builds and get it into the hands of the utility customers who can deploy it at scale.
CLEAResult Energetics supports federal agencies, state governments, and utility clients on clean energy and decarbonization programs:
- Federal: Program offices within the DOE, as well as agencies including the EPA, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Transportation
- State government: Programs supporting clean energy and decarbonization at the state level
- Utilities: Both investor-owned and municipal utilities nationwide

That reach depends on the people behind it. The roughly 100-person team pairs deep technical expertise with strong data, analytics, and policy capabilities:
- Technical expertise in transportation electrification and EVs, building and industrial decarbonization, grid modernization, hydrogen and fuel cells, energy storage, and renewables
- Engineering disciplines including mechanical, chemical, and environmental science
- Data and analytics capabilities, including modeling, geographic information systems, software, and cost-benefit analysis
- Policy and program skills spanning climate and energy policy, grants and contracts management, and equity and community engagement
That's the heart of his current role: not doing the research, but closing the gap between what's proven in a pilot and what gets built into the grid.
Ask Adam what keeps good technology from scaling, and he won't point to the technology. He'll point to a chicken-and-egg problem the CLEAResult Energetics team knows well: a promising pilot proves itself in the field, and before a utility can deploy it broadly, it typically has to be listed in a state's Technology Reference Manual (TRM).
Getting into a TRM usually requires evidence of exactly the kind of large-scale deployment the technology hasn't had the chance to prove yet. Add in understandably risk-averse utilities, tight budgets, and the very real friction of stakeholder buy-in and regulatory approval, and you get a cycle where good ideas can stall for reasons that have nothing to do with whether they work.

It's not a technology problem. It's a trust and deployment problem, and closing that gap is what Adam spends most of his days doing now: identifying which of CLEAResult Energetics' DOE-born technologies are ready for market and building the case, program by program, for utilities to move on them.
That focus is also, not coincidentally, the same instinct carrying him from the steel mill floor onward: a belief that the real barriers to change are rarely technical. They're cultural. They're about who trusts whom, and who's willing to move first.
It's also why Adam approaches his current role as both a technical job and a people job. As VP, his responsibilities range from strategic planning to attending industry conferences on any given day, but the throughline is the same: staying close enough to the technical work to understand it, while making sure a highly skilled team has what it needs to succeed. He points to the leaders running each part of the business, from the division head driving transportation and fleet electrification, to the one leading energy and infrastructure work, to the specialists focused on stakeholder engagement and business development, as the people leading the work day to day.
Adam is quick to note that the real work belongs to the teams those leaders run, not to him. Much of it, in fact, gets published under a federal agency's name rather than the researchers' own — work that rarely gets a byline but shapes energy policy and technology all the same. Crediting that expertise, and building a team where every role, from engineering to stakeholder engagement, is treated as essential, is central to how he leads.

The journey continues: what's next for Adam
The next chapter is still being written. A meaningful part of what's ahead is deepening the connection between CLEAResult Energetics' DOE-backed research and CLEAResult's utility relationships, so promising technologies move from pilot to grid faster than they do today. It also means growing the kind of team Adam has spent his whole career working toward: one where technical depth, data and analytics skill, and policy fluency work side by side, and where each person gets the space to do what they do best.
That forward focus traces back to a mill floor, 20 years and several careers ago — and it’s why CLEAResult's mission feels personal to Adam: changing the way people use energy. He's spent his whole career watching how hard that kind of change is for the people living through it. That's what he's building toward: helping more utilities trust more pilots enough to scale them, helping more people on his team step into the work they're best at, and helping a newly combined organization keep moving like one.
